Alajarvi secondary school has 350 students (age 13-16), 30 teachers, 5 special education teachers and 17 special needs assistants. Besides compulsory classes, pupils can choose on variety of special education courses in grades eight and nine such as German, Russian, follow-up course in English, IT, Mathematics, Home economics, Music, Art,Handcrafts (textile, metal and woodwork) and Sport (orienteering). The meaning of these special courses is to deepen the skills that pupils already have. The school has been selected to participate in PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) in the spring 2017 which evaluates students aged 15 to 16 in math, science, literacy and problem solving. These skills and capabilities are studied in the most realistic situations that resemble everyday life and future needs. The school has been part of European projects from 2004 and has a highly motivated staff to continue good cooperation in developing knowledge of intangable cultural heritage, especially because of the different way of living between the north and the Mediterranian Europe. In this way Finnish pupils will broaden their horizons and get to know the European cultural heritage better.
